Pregnancy Travel Tips
57Stay comfortable and healthy while traveling pregnant
- Check with a midwife/doctor: Before buying your next cheap flight, talk to a medical professional. If you know
where you have to fly, do some research to take to your doctor’s appointment to discuss. Ask your medical professional if it is a safe place for a pregnant woman to travel to health-wise. As if you need any additional immunizations, or if there are local foods you should avoid.
- Pregnancy Travel Dates: As per the American College of
Obstetricians & Gynecologists, air travel is safe for pregnant
women during the second trimester – weeks 18 to 24. If you are
considering a flight during your pregnancy, check with the airline
before you book. Before you travel get a medical certificate from your doctor confirming that
it’s safe for you to travel.
- Don't Be Shy- Tell Everyone You're Pregnant: Before turning over your credit card number, call the airline, hotel, etc and let them know that you have a baby on board. If you require it, ask if they can make special accommodations for your situation. Most airlines
want to make sure you are safe and comfortable and will ensure that you get extra care. They might offer
better seating and assist you in getting a special meal request (or extra cookies for when you get hungry- again!).
- Get a Good Seat: Airline seats are never the most comfortable seats to start with. Add your new bulky size and sensitive spots, and traveling can be a nightmare. Call the airline to reserve a premium seat when you
make your booking.
- Dress for Comfort: You may want to dress comfortably over fashionably. Pick non-restrictive clothing, supportive stockings, and slip on shoes (for all that awful foot swelling).
- In-Air Entertainment and Comfort: Consider bringing your own food on board so that you get something you will enjoy, won't upset your stomach, and will be enough to satisfy you. Don't be shy- ask a flight attendant to help you with your carry-on luggage. Get up and walk around to stretch and avoid getting blood clots.
- Take Safety Precautions: Have a list of emergency phone numbers and names on you. Also, have your family contact information on you, if you are traveling alone. Ask your medical professional to give you the name of a doctor or hospital to contact in case of emergency at your destination.
- Have a safe and enjoyable trip!
